The BIG Independent Group Convention and Expo took place in Indian Wells at the Renaissance Resort earlier this month. Agents from Fairfax Insurance Services were in attendance at the 3 day event that consisted of continuing education classes, lectures, mixers, and of course the trade show floor. The BIG Independent Group Convention is a wonderful way for independent agents and agencies to locate additional resources to help run their business. The convention is also a social event where agents, wholesalers, and others involved in the insurance industry can get together to network. It gives everyone an opportunity to catch up with the latest industry news and trends.
One of takeaways from this year’s convention was the growing change in the auto insurance industry. This is a facet of the insurance industry that is seeing tons of reform and changes. One of these had to do with the question of how companies will handle the approaching issue of driverless cars. Another had to do with growing presence of ridesharing companies such as Uber and Lyft. One of the biggest changes to the auto industry is the fact that much of is going online now. Particularly, younger consumers are more likely to go online and look for automated insurance quoting options as opposed to picking up the phone and calling an agent.
After Friday’s core education classes, the fun moved to the trade show room floor. Vendors from all facets of the insurance industry had a chance to showcase their products, services, and chat with independent agents. Prizes and raffles were held by many of the vendors present, including Progressive’s annual cash prize raffles on both Friday and Saturday during the trade show. Friday evening agents gathered for a fun hospitality mixer before day one of the convention concluded and everyone returned to their respective rooms for some much needed down time.
Day two was the final full day of the BIG Independent Group Convention and Expo and another day for agents to gather on the trade show floor. This was the last chance for vendors to show off their services, attract agents to their booths, and bring everyone together before the BIG 80’s party in the evening. The party was followed by a viewing of a popular sporting event. Finally every had a chance to unwind and let loose some steam before returning home Sunday. We encourage independent agents and agencies from all over to attend future conventions. There’s no other place where there is such a diverse set of resources for the insurance industry. It’s an amazing chance to learn, network, and apply that knowledge upon returning back to the office.
